Skin Nourishing Butter
I want to introduce you to my little side passion, the skin nourishing butter. Something I’ve been playing with for a while, learning about herbal infusions and making different types of products like balms and salves over the years.
I’ve been curious about herbal medicine for as long as I can remember, when I first started my nutrition degree in 2012, I switched to Naturopathy after a year, completed one year before switching back to nutrition.
Along the way I’ve learnt a lot about herbs, their actions and properties and how they benefit the skin both internally and externally. Over the years, there have been three herbs in particular that I keep coming back to - gotu kola, rose and calendula. Three powerhouse herbs that work to protect, heal and optimise skin health both internally and externally.
Gotu kola - rich in vitamins A, B’s, C, D & K and minerals like silica, zinc, magnesium, phosphorus & selenium. Traditionally used for brain health, it’s been called the elixir of life as it helps to strengthen cognition, digestion, tonify the adrenals and purify the blood. On the skin, it’s used to heal wounds, bruises, ulcers, varicose veins, fluid retention and eczema. I love gotu kola for its ability to improve the integrity of connective tissue, particularly in vein walls, helping to improve blood circulation.
Rose - contains carotene, nicotinamide, pectins as well as B vitamins, C, E & K. Rose has been used for its calming effect on the nervous system, supporting liver function, acting as a sedative as well as a tonic for the kidneys, uterus and skin. Topically it’s used to cool and soothe irritated skin, dry skin, rosacea, acne and eczema. It helps to heal burns and bruises and its mood enhancing properties make it a powerful natural anti-depressant.
Calendula - regarded as one of the safest herbs to treat an array of skin conditions, but is not recommended for anyone allergic to the asteraceae family. Rich in carotenoids, flavonoids, mucilage as well as vitamins A, B & C, it acts as a tonic, anti-inflammatory, antiseptic, anti-fungal, vulnerary (wound healing). It’s widely used to treat skin concerns like eczema, rashes, burns and sunburn, ulcers, infections and inflammation.
And then there’s the butters, cacao butter, shea butter & mango butter. All three are super nourishing for the skin, containing hydrating, protecting and regenerative properties that soak into the skin leaving it feeling soothed and replenished.
Although I have been playing with these infusions and balms for a while now, no doubt they will continue to change and evolve as I continue to expand my knowledge and learn more. For now, this body butter is used within all of my bespoke treatments and small batches are made to sell in studio.
