LED Light Therapy Facials: What You Need to Know Before Getting One

LED facials have been around for decades now, but it’s only recently that they’ve become popular. Celebrities like Meghan Markle and Emma Stone are well-known to love the treatment. Meghan swears by the Dermalux, the treatment used in preparation for her big Royal Wedding.

The time has now come where perhaps you are thinking of getting an LED facial. Maybe you’ve heard some hype that LED light therapy makes your skin glow. You may also be wondering if using light therapy for wrinkles or skin problems actually works.

Below, we’ll look at LED facials in detail, including what they do, the different types of LED  wavelengths and outline what you need to know before getting one.

What is LED light therapy?

An LED facial (LED standing for ‘light-emitting diode’) is a non-invasive treatment whereby a specific type of light is emitted onto your skin. It is a non-invasive treatment that delivers various wavelengths that are absorbed into the skin’s surface for rejuvenation and corrective benefits. It is designed to treat a range of conditions, including redness, sun spots and wrinkles. Dermalux LED treatments use clinically proven wavelengths, and it’s important to note that not all LED machines have these.

Some of the benefits of LED facials include:

  • Stimulating cell renewal and collagen production

  • Addressing problem skin conditions such as acne and redness

  • Accelerating skin healing

  • Calms redness and irritation

  • Reduces pigmentation

  • Stimulates vascular repair

  • Accelerates wound healing

Following one light therapy session, you can generally expect immediate improvement to your skin tone, hydration, luminosity and overall longer-lasting skin health benefits.

LED facials are also useful for sensitive skin conditions, offering relief to redness and irritation.

What are the types of light therapy?

There are different types that you may be considering taking. There are three main types of LED therapy including blue, red and near infrared treatment. We’ll outline each of these therapies below. These three wavelengths powered by the unique Dermalux Flex have been clinically proven to effectively deliver targeted light into the skin. Be cautious of other machines that may not be scientifically proven, as they may not have the same efficacy in penetrating the skin at the correct depths, and therefore won’t deliver the desired results.

  • Blue light

This is frequently used to address acne issues and improve eczema and psoriasis. It contains antibacterial properties and is known to improve skin clarity. Complete with anti-inflammatory effects, blue LED light decreases excess oil production and helps to prevent future breakouts without further irritating the skin.

  • Red light

This is a very common type of LED therapy. Known to stimulate collagen and elastin production, red light works to reduce fine lines in your skin, redness and inflammation while also boosting hydration to your skin.

It helps to improve skin texture and tone, and also stimulates your circulation and lymphatic system.

Red light causes mitochondria (AKA our cell’s powerhouses) to produce more ATP (Adenosine Triphosphate), an essential compound that provides cellular energy which in turn energises skin cells, stimulating them to function more efficiently.

  • Near infrared light

Near infrared light is sometimes referred to as the ultimate anti-aging wavelength, similar to what is used in infrared saunas. It boosts your body’s production of collagen, smooths out wrinkles, reduces pigmentation, stimulates vascular repair and can also accelerate the process of wound healing.

It works on the deeper layers of the skin and is ideal for the most sensitive skins.

It has an added benefit of calming the nervous system by activating the parasympathetic nervous system, helping to relax the body from head to toe.

Do LED light facials really work?

Yes! LED facials work in a unique way by prompting your body to heal itself. The LED light improves the texture and feel of your skin by reducing inflammation and promoting the body to restore and rejuvenate cells and tissues.

After just one treatment, you can expect to see improved hydration and skin tone, and the appearance of a natural healthy glow.

So whether you’re using light therapy for wrinkles or other skin problems, LED facials really do work! You should always, however, speak to a medical professional if you have any concerns to ensure the treatment is right specifically for you and your body. Book an LED facial with us.

What does LED light do for your skin?

LED facial treatments can assist in the reduction of redness on your face caused by vascular issues or a particular skin tone. The lights used during the process act like chargers to power up the natural processes of your cells.

The light is absorbed into the body, powering up each cell and killing off any harmful bacteria that might be residing there. This treatment encourages your own body to promote the healing and repair of the soft tissue.

Are LED light facials safe?

Yes, LED facials are safe and non-invasive with no down-time needed. This contemporary skin treatment assists to improve complexion and aid rejuvenation for all types of skin. It can be used by people who have even the driest and most sensitive skin types.

Some people get overworked about the dangers of LED light therapy, but it often stems from a misunderstanding about what the treatment involves. One recent study determined that phototherapy using LED displays an excellent safety profile.

At Nurture & Nourish Skin, we have helped many people with acne, including some with severe cases, to see an improvement in the severity of their cases. LED facials are also suitable for people with noticeable pigmentation and psoriasis. It can help to heal and improve the appearance of scarring and wounds and can be used on other areas of the body, not just the face!

LED facials are considered safe for people who wear contact lenses, or have had semi-permanent makeup applied. People with pacemakers and other implants can also safely receive this treatment.

Who should not use LED light therapy?

LED light therapy is not for everyone. Be careful of some of the following LED light therapy contraindications that you could easily miss.

You should speak with your skin therapist if you have recently changed or introduced new active skincare products.

While it is considered safe for a majority of the population, there are some people for whom we do not recommend LED facials. This includes people with epilepsy or who experience seizures triggered by light or any sensitivity to light, including light-induced migraines and photosensitive eczema.

If you have conditions such as lupus, porphyria or active cancers, we do not provide LED treatment.

We generally do not recommend LED light therapy for people under 16 years of age. But in the case of young people with severe skin conditions, it is worth discussing this treatment with your doctor.

If you are pregnant or undergoing IVF treatment, speak with your trusted health practitioner before undergoing LED treatments. As there is limited research conducted on pregnant women, there is some uncertainty as to whether LED is considered safe to use during pregnancy. Always do your own research and seek guidance from a trusted health practitioner if in doubt.

Can I have LED whilst breastfeeding?

Yes! The wavelengths used during the treatment is not very deep, therefore it will not affect milk ducts. Studies have shown that the use of lasers in light therapy is unobtrusive and safe to use while breastfeeding.
