What is Cosmetic Acupuncture?

Cosmetic acupuncture is a specialised treatment that sits at the intersection of Chinese medicine and aesthetic skin care. It works on two levels simultaneously — addressing the surface concerns you can see, and the internal patterns that are driving them.

Ultra-fine needles are placed at precise points on the face, neck and body to stimulate circulation, encourage collagen production and release the muscular tension that contributes to fine lines, sagging and a dull complexion. Unlike injectables, which work by restricting movement, cosmetic acupuncture works by restoring it — bringing blood, qi and vitality back to tissue that has become contracted, congested or depleted.

At HERA, every cosmetic acupuncture session is tailored to you. Your skin condition, your cycle, your stress levels, your constitution — all of it informs the treatment. No two sessions are identical because no two visits are the same.

Frequently Asked Questions On Cosmetic Acupuncture

How does cosmetic acupuncture differ from other anti-ageing treatments?

Most anti-ageing treatments work by restricting or filling — they address the symptom without touching the cause. Cosmetic acupuncture takes the opposite approach. By stimulating the body's own repair processes, improving circulation and releasing held tension, it works with your skin rather than overriding it. The results build over time rather than fading between appointments.

Is it suitable for all skin types?

Yes — cosmetic acupuncture is one of the few aesthetic treatments that genuinely suits all skin types, including sensitive and reactive skin. There are no products being applied that could irritate, and the needles themselves are ultra-fine and placed with precision. If you have specific concerns, reach out before booking and we'll talk through whether it's right for you.

Are there age restrictions?

No. Cosmetic acupuncture is relevant at every age — in your twenties and thirties for prevention and skin health, in your forties and beyond for rejuvenation and structural support. The treatment adapts to where your skin is, not where it should be according to a protocol.

How long do results last?

This varies depending on your skin condition, lifestyle, age and how regularly you come. Generally, a course of treatments produces results that last several months. Regular maintenance, monthly or seasonal, sustains and builds on those results over time. Think of it less like a treatment and more like a practice.

Can it help with acne or pigmentation?

Yes. Cosmetic acupuncture addresses the underlying patterns that drive skin conditions rather than just managing the surface. For acne, this often means working with hormonal balance, liver qi and digestion. For pigmentation, improving circulation and reducing stagnation. Results take time, this is not a quick fix, but they are real and they go deeper than most topical treatments.

What happens during a session?

Your session begins with a brief check-in, then a double cleanse to prepare the skin. Ultra-fine needles are placed at targeted points on the face and body, where they rest for around 20–25 minutes. During this time most clients drift into a deeply relaxed state, some fall asleep. After the needles are removed, the treatment continues with facial massage, Gua Sha, cupping or LED depending on the session length and your skin's needs. We close with serum, moisturiser and SPF.

What are the benefits?

Improved skin tone and texture — reduction in fine lines, especially expression lines — firmer, more lifted facial contours — reduced puffiness and improved lymphatic drainage — a clearer, more radiant complexion — better sleep and reduced stress as a frequent side effect — and a growing sense of ease in your own skin over time.

What are the risks?

Cosmetic acupuncture is very safe in trained hands. Minor bruising at needle sites is the most common side effect and usually resolves within a day or two. Slight redness or temporary tenderness can occur. Serious complications are extremely rare. We'll discuss any concerns before your first treatment.

Who is it not suitable for?

People with bleeding disorders, those on blood thinners, or anyone with active skin infections at the treatment site should not receive cosmetic acupuncture. It is not suitable during the first trimester of pregnancy. Some autoimmune conditions and medications may also be contraindications — please complete your intake form honestly and we'll confirm suitability before your appointment.

How many sessions do I need?

A course of eight to ten sessions is recommended to achieve meaningful, lasting results — booked weekly or fortnightly. After that, monthly or seasonal maintenance keeps the skin supported. If you're considering a series, our 10-session packages offer the best value.

What to know

Before your visit

A comprehensive intake form is sent when you book your initial appointment. Please complete it honestly — it allows us to tailor your treatment and confirm suitability. If you're on any medications or managing a health condition, note it on the form and we'll discuss it before we begin.

Consistency matters

Cosmetic acupuncture rewards regularity. Weekly or fortnightly sessions in the initial course allow your body to build on each treatment. Spacing sessions too far apart in the beginning slows the cumulative effect.
