The Secret to Healthy Skin: It’s More Than Just Your Skincare.

As a holistic facialist, I often see clients putting a lot of emphasis on their skincare products to "fix" their skin concerns. If they don't see quick results, the products are often dismissed as ineffective and end up being tossed aside or considered a waste of money. While high-quality, effective skincare products can certainly help address skin concerns and support healthy skin, there's much more to achieving that radiant glow.

The Inside-Out Approach

It’s the internal work that makes the biggest impact. Healthy skin starts from within. If you're dealing with gut issues like poor digestion, nutrient absorption problems, dysbiosis, or bowel irregularities, chances are your skin (and even your mood, thanks to the gut-skin-brain axis) will show it. Proper hydration is also crucial for healthy skin. Without adequate hydration, your skin cells can't shed naturally as they would in a healthy, hydrated skin, leading to a dull complexion and build up of dead skin cells.

The Role of the Skin Barrier

Your skin barrier, also known as the acid mantle, is your skin's first line of defense against pathogens. If this barrier is impaired, it affects your skin's ability to effectively protect the skin, as well as absorb and utilise skincare products effectively. A disrupted skin barrier often manifests as irritation, redness, and sensitivity. Conditions like peri-oral dermatitis, acne, rosacea, and eczema are common signs of a compromised skin barrier. Addressing these issues requires a holistic approach, combining internal factors (diet, lifestyle, supplementation) with external care (LED and non-invasive treatments, appropriate skincare).

The Importance of Using the Right Skincare

Using the wrong skincare products can do more harm than good. This again, will disrupt the skin barrier if your products are too harsh, acidic or alkalising, if you are over exfoliating or if your products are too heavy or not nourishing enough for your skin. This is where a trusted skin therapist comes in, helping to assess your skin and recommend the right products and treatments to support optimal skin health.

Less is More

Often, less is more when it comes to skincare. Less exfoliation, fewer products. Every skin is unique, so it's essential to pay attention to how it responds to what you use, your digestion, and the foods you consume. All these factors make a significant difference in your skin's health.
